MISSION STUDIES

2009

MAY 25—27, 2009

Theme: POVERTY: CHALLENGES TO CHRISTIANITY IN THE 21st CENTURY

With so many people in our country and the world still living in varying conditions of deprivation and marginalization, poverty as a broad socio-economic and cultural phenomenon presents a spectrum of challenges to Christianity. Especially in the Third World, Christianity is ever more faced with the crucial task of putting theology in the service of promoting change in both church and society in order to bring about the development and empowerment of poor sectors and communities. Jesus declared, “I came that they may have life and have it abundantly” (Jn 10:10b). This remains the mission of Christianity also today.  The question of poverty in a globalized world intersects with the question regarding the identity and mission of Christian churches in the succeeding decades of the 21st century. This lecture series aims to contribute to the clarification of this twin question.
