BEGUILING SPIRIT OF  THE SPIRIT'S (COM)PASSION:

A SEMINAR-WORKSHOP ON CHARISMS IN RELIGIOUS LIFE

September 5,  12 and 19, 2009

Time: 9:00 am - 12:00 noon

Since Pope Paul VI introduced the concept in 1971, theologians and church historians have struggled to explain charism and its role in religious life. The first thirty years of their work have produced rich explanations of the phenomenon. Sadly, they have also brought about dissonant theologies that have precluded religious communities from satisfactorily explaining the richness of their charisms to their very members and lay associates.

Using methods employed in theology, history, spirituality, and sociology, this seminar-workshop presents frameworks to re-envision and re-articulate charisms in religious life, especially “congregational charism.” It seeks to clarify such crucial questions as “What is charism?”, “Why does awareness of the congregation’s charism matter?”, “Is the founder’s charism the congregation’s charism?”, “How do the personal charisms of present members further ‘disclose’ the congregational charism?”

The seminar-workshop is primarily intended for women and men religious – most especially members of non-clerical religious institutes – who are working in initial and on-going formation. It is highly recommendable for members of diocesan congregations and pious unions who are struggling to articulate their identity and place in their local churches.
